Today we will create a progressive story and act it our using the 'Helicopter Story Technique.' Enjoy!
We each contributed a sentence orally to the story and this is what we can up with...
"There was a princess. She lived in a castle. She didn't want to live with the Prince. She wanted her own dressing room. So one day she was running in the dark forest. She was trying to escape from the Prince. Suddenly she saw a handsome boy. She fell in love with him. And the Prince was jealous and got mad. He put a spell on the boy and turned him into a spider. She took the horse and rode away with the spider. The End."
Then we had some volunteers to act this out. Normally you would have the storyteller choose, and ask the class but since we created this as a group we had volunteers.
Stephanie - Princess
Liz - Prince
Mari - Boy
Here are a few pictures of what happened as they acted out the story as it was being read aloud.
After the show, we discuss the many ways we could start this in our classrooms.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop all kinds of skills. As you sit with students and they dictate the story, keep re-reading, as students become more comfortable you can begin to help them expand their vocabulary adding adjectives, listing characters, etc...really developing their sense of story and ability to tell a story.
Have fun!
